A capacitor is a passive two-terminal electronic component that stores electrical energy in an electric field. The physical form and construction of practical capacitors vary widely and many capacitor types are in common use. Capacitors are widely used in electronic circuits for blocking direct current while allowing alternating current to pass. In analog filter networks, they smooth the output of power supplies.
