Formulaically, the symbol used for strain in physics/engineering is a lowercase epsilon (see equations below). The same concept is used for the word stress utilizing the Greek lowercase sigma. When developing the form of this sign, we thought of using an iconic sign and a sign for the concept and ultimately went with both.
