Analytic

Expansion

In Philosophy, an analytic statement means that it is true because the words used in the sentence contain the truth. For example, “All bachelors are unmarried” – “Bachelor” is the word used for a man who is not married. “All triangles have three sides” is another example. The definition of a triangle is a shape with three sides. Please see the entry for synthetic for the contrasting idea to analytic.
