Othello is the title character in Willam Shakespeare’s play of the same name. In the play, Othello is a Moorish soldier, meaning he was black, in a time when there were few representations of non-white citizens in theater. He was married to the beautiful Desdimona, and was betrayed by his friend and ensign, Iago.
